Spotting with Pythagoras

Even if you weren’t a top student at the school, you must have heard about Pythagoras of Samos. Obviously, this ancient Ionian Greek philosopher and mathematician most likely would never imagine plane spotters coming to his homeland, however it became a true for me just few weeks ago.
Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea just one mile of the coast of western Turkey, from which it is separated by Mycale Strait. Its airport is named after Aristarchos of Samos, another ancient astronomer and mathematician, and lies within 5 km from the nearby town of Pythagorio named after Pythagoras in 1955. Even thought, in terms of traffic, it cannot compete neither with Athens, nor with Corfu or Santorini, the LGSM airport still attracts quite a few visitors. Regular traffic includes daily flights to Athens (operated by Olympic Air and Sky Express), Thessaloniki (Olympic Air) and few nearby islands (Sky Express), while summer charters connect the island with number of destinations in the European mainland. Furthermore, during my visit a few helicopters have been repositioned to Samos airport to support fighting with fires at the island and detection of illegal immigrants trying to get to Europe from Asia and Africa via Turkish coast. Feel free to have a quick look at my shots taken at the LGSM airport presented below.
