When I checked all information on spotting at Thessaloniki airport available online, the picture I got wasn’t really optimistic. Due to military presence at the airfield, lightly speaking, photography within close distance to the facility, is not recommended. However, taking into consideration some basic precautions allowing not to interfere with airport security, I managed to take a few nice shots nearby. I just kept in mind the advice to keep a safe distance from the perimeter and main roads patrolled by the police. Afterwards, Greek authorities are known from their not the most friendly approach to our hobby.

Having arrived to Thessaloniki in the early afternoon, the first place I chose, was a side road between fields south from the airport (approach to rwy 34) some 10 minutes’ walk from the highway Thessaloniki – Paraias. I got there most of the traffic until runway in use was changed to 28. As I didn’t have a car, I was unable to change quickly location, so I decided to continue further down the road to the nearest town for an early dinner. Next day I was in the airport terminal, so I took an opportunity to catch some planes on the ramp. Overall, the traffic I was neither extraordinary nor too bad. Apart from Greek operators and different Ryanair affiliates, I managed to catch Tarom ATR72, Bulgaria Air Embraer 190 and LOT Embraer 195. However, my “double catch of the day” were two SwiftAir Hellas planes – Swearingen SA227-AC Metro III and Embraer 120.
