Postcard from Cozumel (CZM/MMCZ)

The airport of Cozumel island definitely is not the largest one in the world or even in Mexico. It handles mainly flights to the United States and Canada bringing holiday makers willing to enjoy the beach or to board one of the cruise ships that daily arrive to local harbor. Even during the high season scheduled traffic is limited to several flights a day that arrive mainly in the afternoon. This actually, gives you a good opportunity for spotting, as island’s main spot is located at the beach within two minutes walk from the airport fence. There is also a small restaurant called El Rincón Caribeño at the beach which serve local dishes, so you won't get hungry between arrivals. However, note that arriving aircraft are there still relatively high, while it is difficult to catch them over the runway itself.
During my quick visit at the island last February, I managed to catch several Boeing 737s – American, United, Westjet and Sun Country. In addition to that, I got a single bizjet and have seen Volaris Airbus A320 as well as a Fairchild freighter. I was surprised with three Mexican Air Force vintage military planes (two North American T-28A Trojans accompanied by a single Lockheed T-33A Shooting Star) used as monument at the end of the runway. For obvious reasons, I didn’t want to check whether Mexican military personnel understands this hobby, so after taking quick shots I went to the beach nearby to catch the arrivals. Additionally, apart from lack of the willingness to verify international friendship between spotters and army guys, that particular place did not offer a good view to arriving aircraft (as they were flying right over the head), while taxiing planes were way too far for a good picture.
