Madrid’s newest spot

My job requires me to visit occasionally Madrid. Typically my meetings are scheduled for few days, but sometimes there is a chance for sparing a few hours for plane spotting either before or just after arrival. Bearing that in mind, for my recent trip to Spain I packed camera and … succeeded in visiting Barajas airport for a few hours. As some months ago new “official” spotting location has been opened, I decided to try it out.
Getting to the new location is relatively easy. If you’re driving the GPS will guide you there (see “spotting area” in google maps), however getting there by public transport is also not a problem as it is just about 10 minutes’ walk from Barajas metro station. Once you will pick up a spotter’s badge from a pass office located in a white container in the parking lot, you just have to approach security guards at the main airport gate who will let you in into the spotter’s area.
The new spot gives a you nice view for all aircraft taxing to/from terminals 1-2-3 as well as for those arriving to western part of terminal 4-A – if the rwy 32L is used for landings. During the summer months light is good in the afternoon (ca. after 1500 hrs), but bear in mind that since you’re quite close to the taxi way a short lens for some aircraft might be required. The only issue I faced while visiting a new spot were a few obstructing objects as on the right hand side where ground handling equipment is stored as well as a bit of a wired fence (which can be overlooked if you bring a ladder).
As LEMD is always good for spotters, during my recent visit I managed to add a few nice birds to my collection as pictured below.
